1991 Yamaha 9.9 4 stroke shift linkage

For the life of me I can't disengage the upper shift rod from the lower. Shift mechanism is up and down. have backed off the 10mm locking nut but cant turn the lower shift shaft to disengage from the 10mm "barrel" nut that is attached to the upper shift rod...what am I missing.....manual doesn't show me anything!!!!

Not sure if I understand the problem you are having but it sounds like you are trying to turn the lower shift shaft. It does not turn. Only the barrel nut is rotated, after the jam nut is loosened of course.

As I recall from memory, loosen the jam nut and then turn the barrel nut upwards as far as it will go. The two rods should then be disconnected at which time the lower unit can be removed.

I find it easier to do all of this when the motor is in reverse as I think you have better access to the two nuts.

Yes it was the top hexoganal barrel nut that wasn't turning, persuaded it with some heat....all good.... thanks
