I have a 70BETO mid 80 Yamaha outboard which has leaked oil from behind the tilt trim motor.
As far as I can see when motor is removed, the valve sub assembly has popped out. the actual serclip holding it in has come out and so the assembly is pushed out by the pressure.
I suspect that the indent that holds the serclip in place has worn a little and is not holding the clip in place and when trim is used the pressure blows it out.
My question is , is there any way to repair this problem or I am I up for a new tilt trim

What happens is corrosion gets in the groove and forces the snap ring out. Reinsert the check valve and with something small, clean out the groove and reinstall the snap ring.

Re: oil leak yamaha tilt trim

Not a bad idea to occasionally spray entire tilt/trim motor and pump with White Lithium spray grease to keep water off/out of it....grease sets up semi-stiff....stays on a long time....really helps prevent corrosion, especially in a saltwater environment...
