Is this how you test a fuel pump on 99 Yamaha VMAX 150 ?

Hello I have been told that the way to test a fuel pump on a 99 Yamaha 150 is take it loose from the block put your finger over the hole on the back and pump the primer bulb if gas comes out the hole its bad I have two pumps one has gas that comes out the other dose not,common sense says I have one bad pump but I didnt want to spend the money on one until I verified that this is how you test them

fuel should not come out the pulse port to crankcase, I would replace both.
If one goes how far is the other from doing it also

Thanks again 99yam40 I havent had alot of time latley but I put the new pump on tested it today on the hose and it ran great if all goes well I am going to the lake tomorrow
