Suzuki DT40oil light flickering and cutting power

Hi

I have a 1970's DT40. I've been out in the sea 5 times now and the last couple of times the engine has felt a bit ropey.

Today it started OK but sounded as if it were idling a bit low. I engaged the gear and went off to sea. As I accelerated slowly after leaving the harbour the engine started to struggle and judder and the oil light started flashing. The engine would not go faster than about 8 KNs. I eased off the throttle and it ran OK. Opened it up and same again. I took it out of gear and just ran the throttle but the same again. When the revs reached a certain level, it started to choke again and the oil light flickered again. At one point whilst trolling along at about 5kn, it just suddenly cut out. I primed the engine and started it again and it carried on as before.

Anyone any ideas or is it going to be fuel filter clean, carb clean and pump clean and see how I get on?

fuel should not cause oil light to come on.
The suzukies have an oil flow alarm from what I have read

So it could be a problem with a oil blockage or something then? Would that cause the engine to hold back?
