I thought I released the shift rod when I removed the cotter pin from a cam, but I have the power head up about an inch and the shift rod came with it. I see that there is a very small cotter pin directly below the power head that is tough to get to and is very small, so I'm a little hesitant to remove it. Any ideas on what to do? Did I mess up my lower unit?

Thanks,
Andrew

You need to unbolt the bracket on the side of the block. But no damage was done. It slides in and out.

Thanks Capt Ken. I did unbolt the bracket and it worked! I still can't get the shift rod to align, but I'll keep trying. I guess if I get it in correctly, I should be able to shift manually and see which way the prop/drive shaft turns when I turn the driveshaft/prop?

The darn rod wouldn't slide back in, so I took off the lower unit and cleaned the shift rod end. I assembled the lower unit and the shift rod went right in!!
