suzuki df 9.9 blows oil from the crankcase breather tube

I just rebuilt the carb and briefly laid the engine on its side (the correct side per the placard) Now when started and reved up an oily substance bubbles up through the crankcase vent tube and into the carb. The oil does not have much viscosity; is very dark but doesn't smell like gas? Could it be drive oil? Help - stranded on Catalina Island!

lower unit lube smells a lot different from motor oil and I do not see how it could ever make it up into the carbs
