I am repowering a 1968 Starcraft Holiday with a Yamaha F90L. The motor is a 2010, that was sold in 2012. The seller had the boat attached to a fresh water crib, which broke away in a storm, damaging the boat, which sunk.

The seller advises that the motor was not submerged, as it was tilted all the way up. The insurance company wrote off the boat but not the motor.

I have agreed to buy the boat, subject to a satisfactory inspection by a marine mechanic.

Do you have any advice on what I should ask to be inspected?

Compression, timing and that spark is jumping a large gap on all cylinders

Take it to a Yamaha mechanic and let them plug the diagnostics in and take a reading. It will tell you a lot along with a compression, leakdown. The mechanic can do a sparktest with the diagnostic computer.

Thanks for the advice on this. I ended up buying the motor and installing it on my '68 Starcraft Holiday - it required an all new steering system, harness etc. Boat runs great. The mechanic indicated the motor was fine - still under warranty, and had only 28.4 hours on it. Saved 3k - 4k off new cost.
