I got a 2005 25hp Yamaha that will not stay in reverse. I can hold the shift lever in reverse and make it stay in there but as soon as I let go and give it gas it pops out. With the motor dead I can put it in reverse and kick the prop with my foot and it will come out. So I took the linkage rod off and put it in reverse again and kicked the prop again and again and it stayed everytime. but as soon as I hooked the rod back up and put it into reverse it pops out again. Anybody got any ideas as to what I need to look at next. It is a has a tiller handle not steerieng wheel also.

Re: 25 hp Yamaha that keep popping out of reverse

HI tt. Welcome to iboats. I'm no Yami expert, but I would recheck the shift linkages. If that doesn't do it then you may have to open up the gear case and inspect the clutch dog and REV gear which I suspect may be worn. That seems a little unlikely considering it's only a 2005 model, but stranger things have happened.
