My 2000 yamaha 150hp crankshaft seal is leaking oil and
gas down the drive shaft. I notice when i drop the lower unit.
I went to a shop and they say I have to split the block and
change out the gear drive. So do I really need to split the block
. looking. at the part diagram , there a housing and 2 oil seal and
O ring . I don't see why they want to split the block and want
$1500 for the job. Any tips on changing the seal will be
great or info on the leaky lower crankshaft seal
thanks

Re: Yamaha lower crankshaft seal replacement ?

Whoa there. Is this a two stroke or four stroke? How much oil are we talking about? If its a two stroke, fuel and oil will puddle around the lower bearing but is then sucked up and dribbled over the top bearing. The seal does install from the rear of the bearing cap so the cap would have to be removed. They may want to split the halves in order to get the cap out easier. But it can be pried out very carefully without splitting the case.
