Yamaha Outboard -Year?

My mate bought a 115CETO model, could someone please
tell the year from serial # 6E5 L 398501 Y......Is this 1995 model as shown in a chart
But motor looks newer.

And also his 4hp aux has Serial# 4AC 6E0 S 156218 X

Will be great help to order parts and all.

Pulling from memory, closer to 85.

Thanks Capt Ken, buts its definetly not 85. Its looks flash as and has V4 inscribed on top of cowling.
Been searching the net and learned that the letter "Y" in the SN# means its a 2000 model,
just need confirmation from the experts. Anyone?

Now that I'm at my shop and looking at my chart, Yamaha never used an 0. The first years they came in the country, the 1984 was sometimes stamped AETO and then later ones had an N, which stood for 84. So we use to call the O's the 83 engines. Are you sure its not a Q? As for the Y, only the last letter of the model denotes the year. Is not like a Johnson that uses two letters and serial numbers has nothing to do with year built.

The last letter is Y . So think its 2000. Correct me please if I'm wrong.

It's the last letter of the model number, not serial number. Serial number has no bearing on build date.

Let's back up a minute. Where are you located? Being you used the term " mate" , I'm thinking down under or the UK now. If so, then your numbers has no relation to those here in the states.

Check with your local Yamaha dealer where you are at, they will be able to give the correct year with that info

Hey Capt Ken you are right, Im from NZ mate and pretty new to this forum.
And yeah that letter "Y" is not part of SN#
but totally separate.

I was told the last letter on its own stands for the year.
115CETO .....model
6E5.............Siffix
L.................Shaft
398501..........Serial No
Y..................Year

Didnt know numbers here would be different from US.
