1989 yamaha 8hp

My new-old 1989 yamaha 8hp has not been ran in 5 years. I dont know anything about it. What shd i check before starting the motor?

The fuel tank, hoses, filters and carb should be drained(drain plug on carb), and flushed, then filled with fresh gas/oil mix.. Inspect, clean or new spark plug, check/change oil in lower unit. Probably time for a new water pump kit, but you could go ahead and run the motor and look for stream of water from tell-tale. Order the pump kit now and put it on later. She should start right up! Hey I finally got around to repairing the yamaha. i really appreciate the response. I had to clean out the foot and replace the impeller. The motor runs perfectly and starts on the first pull. Thanks
