i have a either 87 or 88 suzuki dt75 which had water pump go out after replacing that so proper water flow was restored noticed temp. sensor had half melted and water was shooting out so fixed that and now found low compression on top cylinder my mechanic said its most likely the piston rings melted and broke apart so i am going to attempt to pull piston and check cylinder myself. i have very little boat motor experience and was wondering if someone on here can help me out with the steps to pull the piston and change rings because all the work and parts got too expensive to keep having mechanic do work thanks in advance

you will have to split the motor apart to get it done.
Need to pick up a service manual so you have all the info and specs

Get the OEM manual, not an aftermarket.
You will regret it if you don't.

I have both and there is no comparison.

You may need new pistons, rings, bore the cylinders, etc., lots of work, parts$ and money$$ on a 25 year old motor. Maybe search around for a used, rebuilt, remanufactured powerhead....maybe even a good used motor? If you could find a used motor very similar to yours, then you could swap 'em out and keep your old motor for parts...just a thought! Good Luck!
