Suzuki DF140, fuel starvation

Hi,

I have a 2007 Suzuki DF140 outboard with 50 hours on it, and believe it has a fuel starvation problem.

I squeeze the hand bulb a few times, the engine starts and runs for a few minutes, then cuts out. Squeeze the hand bulb and it starts and runs for a while then stops. The fuel pump has been replaced twice.

I have run out of ideas. Any suggestions please ?

You need to monitor fuel pressures to see what is going on,
possibly you have fuel pump not turning on if it is an electric one

Thanks for the response 99yam40. The pump is mechanical with an actuator which runs off a cam.

After some more research on the web tonight it seems a few people are having this problem but Suzuki are not responding to it.

Have you run the boat on a known good separate 6 gallon tank & line?

can you keep motor running by pumping the bulb?

Did replacing fuel pump solve the problem for some time?
Or did it not help the last 2 times you replaced it?

We are able to keep the motor running by pumping the bulb and replacing the fuel pump made no difference.

Hook up fuel pressure/ vacuum gauge to both sides and see if pump is even trying to do anything.
Either it is sucking air or the pump is not being operated

Well A motor that only has 50 hours on it and 5 years old isnt in your favor. What Fuel Pump did you change twice? From the sounds of it you may have a bad high pressure pump. When you turn the key on listen for a pump running behind the intake. It will only run for 3 seconds when the engine isnt running.

I believe he just meant that with only 10 hours of running a year, the motor has done a lot of just sitting letting fuel system to get gunked up as the fuel now a days does not like to sit long before going bad.

Being a fuel injected motor, it should have a electric pump in the vapor separator also, that pump may not be running as it should. Monitoring fuel pressures would help find the problem

Re: Suzuki DF140, fuel starvation

It's been fixed.

A local mechanic is a Yamaha specialist. His first reaction to looking at it was to point out the poor quality of the original fuel pipe and that the pipe on the equivalent Yamaha would be larger and more substantial.

He also identified where the pipe had partially collapsed on itself near a cable tie and when the engine ran the pipe fully collapsed on itself. He replaced the pipe, took the boat out to sea for good test and no more problems.

Why has it only started happening ? Probably the age of the pipe.

Thanks for your suggestions and I will post a picture of my first fish caught this year.

John,

I am going through the same problem with a Suzuki 2-stroke 115hp (fuel injected). I have replaced the mechanical fuel pump twice and had the high pressure pump looked at too. Where and what exactly is the "fuel pipe" you mentioned? Is this a fuel line? I have replaced all of those too. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

William,

Its the pipe from the fuel tank to the fuel pump that was replaced. The Yamaha one is more substantial and has brading in it.

I am down on the boat on Wednesday, weather permitting. If I can I will take a picture but you should be able to work it out for yourself.
