Gear Oil Leak / 50 hp 2002 yamaha

I have an oil leak issue with my 2 stroke 2002 50 hp yamaha out board. It looks as though the leak is coming from the water induction screen on the lower unit. Has anyone had this issue? Any idea as to what would cause a leak like this? I am going to drain the oil and refill it in order to use it this weekend, but before I do I want to make sure this is not a major issue and the boat should not be run. Any information and/or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Are you sure it's lower unit oil? Best to drop the lower unit and check the driveshaft seal and the shifter shaft seal. It would be a good time to replace the water pump, if it's been several years since it was replaced. You have to remove the water pump anyway, to check the driveshaft seal. Good Luck!
