I have a 2012 yamaha F40leha "tiller",Im doing my 20 hr. maint. which includes changing gearcase oil. My owners manual says "in two different places" use "Hypoid gear oil SAE#90" no mention of manine type oil,outboard,GL-5 etc. I called the yamaha dealer who is 80 miles away and of course he recomended yamaha lower unit oil. I have access to various types of outboard or automotive gear oil including synthetics ,I also have an unopened quart of supertech"walmart" marine 80-90w GL-5 lower unit gear oil. To get yamalube its 160 mile trip or e-bay. Thoughts/Recomendations.

Re: yamaha f40 gear oil

any #90 gear oil will do. I would use an oil made for marine use, in case you get some water intrusion it will hold up better. they sell it at walmart or most auto parts stores, or you could use merc or OMC, gear lube. I think there is a line of synthetic oil that includes marine oil. that would be best, but pricey.
