I have a 40 hp yamaha 2 stroke with a bad main bearing. Its the top Bearing and stamped on it is 6305 20z. I'm wondering why this bearing has 2 grooves around the outer diameter. The grooves are filled with a hard plastic and act as some type of seal I'm guessing. Im wondering if I can replace the bearing with a standard 6305 bearing that does not have these grooves. I've been told several different things. Any Ideas ?

Re: 2003 yamaha 40 tlr main bearing

Yes , I just put new pistons, and rings in the motor as I obviously had a overheat or under lubrication issue. The motor had about 1000 hrs and burnt up 2 pistons. Rebuilt the top end and slapped it back together. Ran about 25 gallons of gas on rebuild and then the main upper bearing failed. I guess some residual metal must have been in bearing and it gave. Anyway thanks for the response on the bearing.
