What is the procedure for tilting an engine (Yamaha F90) if the tilt/trim goes out (dead battery, for example)? Is there anything to release, or do you just lift it up by brute force and then set the bracket to keep it up for the trailer ride home?

There's a manual tilt relief screw on the right(starboard) motor bracket, it's a large slot-head screw that you release it by turning clockwise, then you can lift up the motor by hand. You can tilt it up and set it on a Transom Saver or the tilt lock. If it's just on the tilt lock maybe bungee motor down in position to prevent bouncing while trailering. Better to get a Transom Saver anyway since your motor weighs 390lbs., and that's a lot bouncing up and down back there. Good Luck!

Re: Tilting engine when tilt/trim is broken

Thanks for the reply. It hasn't happened yet because I found my loose battery connection before returning to the ramp. But it got me thinking about what I would have needed to do.

Will anything squirt out the screw that you mentioned? Is there anything to be done prior to retightening it? Any tricks for lifting that much weight?

Get lots of help to lift and I do not believe you will be able to do it while in the water unless in shollow water and out of boat.
and you can tighten it back up and that should keep it in place

Only back the screw out about 2-3 turns or you'll have a mess.

Re: Tilting engine when tilt/trim is broken

I finally got around to looking for the screw. The only thing I could find is what the service manual refers to as the "manual valve screw" which sits on the pump housing of the PTT unit. However, that screw would be below the water-line and blocked by the lower unit when the engine is down. How am I supposed to back that screw out at the ramp to lift the engine? Even if I had scuba gear I couldn't get a screw driver in there! I must be missing something here...

There is manual screw go clockwise 2 turns. Then lift it up not that hard if your beefy. What motor weights 400 but is pivoting.

Okay, I was looking at the wrong thing. I see the correct screw now and it is easy enough to get a screwdriver in there.

It is under the water-line. Will turning it twice allow water to get inside and destroy the unit?

Check your manual, I think it is turned counter clock wise to release. FRED

Yeah, I was wondering about that too. There is a stamp on the engine bracket above the hole where the screwdriver goes. It shows a counter-clockwise turn.

Still curious to know if turning the screw while it is underwater will cause a problem. My guess is that it wouldn't because that would be some pretty bad engineering.

Will not hurt a thing, you are just opening up a bypass. While it is on your mind, I suggest you get a screw driver and try to turn the screw. Dont be surprised if it will not turn and you tear up the screw head. Better to know it now than when you need it. FRED

Re: Tilting engine when tilt/trim is broken

I had to loosen my manual release valve to raise my 115 evinrude and then I retightened it after flipping the clip to hold the motor up. Now I was wondering should the motor stay up without the clip in place ? I tried this morning and I lifted the motor a inch or so then released the clip and it would lower but I only lowered it a couple of inches because it is very heavy if I let it lower all the way. Do I need to bleed it ? How would I do that ?
