I have a Yamaha 115 hp 2-stroke outboard Model # 115ETLH with factory controls. The engine runs great and the starter seems to operate fine most of the time. Occasionally, while running at different speeds, I hear a pinging sound at the starter motor. Without touching the key switch at all, the starter gear is trying to engage into the flywheel, and rides up and down the shaft. This problem doesn't happen all the time, but seems serious. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

that is odd...I never heard of that one before...make sure your solenoid is not bleeding through or shorting..also check key switch wiring

Maybe remove starter motor and inspect the bendix gear and operation. Could be a short in that starting circuit, ignition switch, etc. Good Luck!
