I have a 88 model yamaha 4hp that I recently bought. I think I screwed myself. Because after I got it home I heard a noise that I should have heard before buying it. It sounds like a rrr rrr rrr kinda sound when idling and it gets louder and faster at higher rpms. It sounds like the flywheel is rubbing something but it's not. I pulled the starter off and I can shake the flywheel a little bit. And I can hear a noise when I turn it by hand, sounds like a bad roller bearing to me. But I hope it's not.

I talked to one guy who said those motors were basically unrebuildable. I don't know. I haven't torn into it yet.
What does it sound like to yall? It runs excellent otherwise.

Thanks, Terry

Re: 4hp yamaha noise

Yes it is. But I can see where someone has had it off before. I see the tool scarring where they tried to hold the flywheel still to loosen the nut.

So I really don't know if they had it off or just tried to get it off.
