Hello,

I have a 1989 15hp yamaha lower unit that I am trying to pull the drive shaft out. I have the bearing carrier and the prop shaft removed, but how do I remove the gear from the drive shaft? I can see a nut, which I can get a wrench on, but I don't know how to grip the drive shaft in order to torque off nut. Is there a special tool? Any suggestions?

Thanks

How about a pipe wrench. Just make sure you do not put it on a surface that matters if it gets marked up/damaged

or wrap a rag around the shaft, lock it in a smooth jaw vice. unscrew the nut.
yes they do make a drive shaft olding tool.
