I am thinking of buying a new 2002 suzuki 50hp engine from a local dealer. The engine is still in its original crate. Can anyone offer any comments if a new motor sitting this long posses any potential problems? Also, any comments about the 2002 suzuki 50hp motor(pros & cons).

Thanks.

Hi, coinkid.

Welcome to iboats. :)

Is that a 2 stroke (DT-50) or a 4 stroke (DF-50)?

I would ask the dealer to replace the impeller in the water pump. It could have dried out in 8 years.

Hi and thank you for your input. It's a 4 stroke with EFI. Your right about the impeller. I've been doing some research online and found that some of these motors may have had some problems. Trying to get more details on exactly what the common problems are with these motors.

If it is in fact new, and you are purchasing it from a legitamate Suzuki dealer, then you should get the three year warranty starting the day you buy it.

The dealer no longer carries Suzuki this is why they are selling this motor at a great price. They are now an autherized Honda dealer only. The motor won't be warrantied, at least that is what they told me.
Thanks.

Does anyone have advice on a new motor that has been sitting 8 years?

Get the serial number and go to your local Suzuki dealer. Have them check to see if it actually is unregistered - if it is, pay them to install the engine and they should be able to warranty register it.
