Does my Suzuki need a vented gas cap

I know that I need to open the vent on My Evirude fuel tank. My Suzuki tank does not have a vent and it started right up and died after 2o minutes, Sqeeze the ball and off I went, Do I need to vent this fuel cap? Thanks

All newer tanks must be vented. Some have the vent built into the cap.
