I'm in the process of replacing a factory Yamaha trim gauge with a Teleflex unit. The sending unit on the motor has 3 wires: black, purple, and orange. All of them were wired into the factory trim gauge. On the back of the Teleflex unit, there is a post marked "S" for the sender wire. Obviously the black is ground, but which of the two wires (orange or purple) should be attached to the "S" on the back of the gauge? Do I have an extra wire now, or do they both attach to the new unit somehow?

double check the application or call teleflex.
I dont think teleflex ever made a trim meter for the 3 wire yamaha sender.
actually its a black a pink and an orange from the sender.

Yes . . . pink wire, not purple. I tried calling Teleflex, but they referred me to Yamaha. I purchased the model that's supposed to fit a pre-2001 motor. Instructions mention nothing about wire colors.
