F50TLRB Yamaha 4-stroke shifting noise

My 50 HP 4-stroke makes a noise when shifting into forward and into reverse. It is a"clank" type noise, not the gear grinding noise. The prop has some rotational play and the noise can be slightly heard when I turn the prop back and forth by hand. Is this noise normal? How much play should there be in the prop when I turn it back and forth?

Sounds very normal, gears are always meshed, when you shift you're just engaging those clutch dogs for forward or reverse, don't shift slow and easy, but just "shift it into gear with a good solid motion", it'll clunk and that's just fine. Need to make sure your idle is correct(around 750RPM's) to prevent damage from shifting at too high idle. Don't worry about prop play while in gear. Good Luck!
