i just bought a rebuilt 1988 40 hp Yamaha. It was rebuilt by a professional mechanic. After about 5 days of use it started making a metal grinding sound near the flywheel. Upon inspection the Housing oil seal under the flywheel broke in two places at the 5 o'clock and 7 o'clock position. This resulted in the housing oil seal rubbing on the inside of the flywhee. I believe the magnets on the inside circumference of the flywheel are toast. My question is what could have cause this. I assume the mechanic used the existing powerhead and did not mix and match halves. I heard this could be the problem. I will pull the flywheel today and see how much damage. What should I check for when I pull the flywheel and investigate the stator magneto etc.
