Yamaha 85 hp I.D model difference

The model # on the yamaha is C85TLR_ .Last letter between P-U is not readable so how else can I tell which year (1991-1996) it may be? Also- are there any major differences over this six year period that I should be aware of?
This is my first post and appreciate any advice.

I'm not certain of the model year differences; reference the Yamaha shop manual for that. I suspect if there are any, they are minor. The tag on the side is the only place to find the model number, I suspect. If you can read the serial number, a Yamaha dealer should be able to look up the model year.

Yamaha model number works as follows: My motor is a C85TLRU

C - C- series

85- 85 horsepower

T- Power tilt/trim with electric start

L- Shaft length: "L" = 20 inches/51 cm.

R- Control method; in this case "remote"

U- Model year 1996.


The breakdown for model year is as such:

'84 = N
'85 = K
'86 = J
'87 = H
'88 = G
'89 = F
'90 = D
'91 = P
'92 = Q
'93 = R
'94 = S
'95 = T
'96 = U
'97 = V
'98 = W
'99 = X
'00 = Y
'01 = Z
'02 = A
'03 = B
