The facts: Overheat alarm gone off 2 of last 4 trips. 2 trips between with no alarm. Definitely seemed HOT to touch, so thinking no false alarm. Last trip, let cool for 30 minutes, started up no alarm, but quickly came back on after a few minutes of running. Limped in on trolling motor. Engine is old suzuki (1987)oil injected 115hp 2 stroke. Tested compression, even at 120 all 4 cyllinders. Believe oil flow to be good, only based on no oil flow alarm, which has happened before due to clog so I believe it works. Engine is "peeing" out pee-hole. Checked water intake both times with nothing visible blocking.

The questions: What are possible causes? Can you still have a good pee-stream and have not enough water flow to properly cool engine (bad impeller)? What further should I do to troubleshoot, before hitting up my mechanic?

Thanks for any help!!!!

Re: Suzuki DT 115 overheat questions?

Just went down that road on my DT140 so I'll tell ya what I did to finally correct the problem. First of all yes you can have a good pee stream and not get enough water to cool the engine, that's what I've been dealing with for a few weeks. If you havn't replaced your impeller in a while you should start there and also check your thermostat. While there go to http://store.brownspoint.com/dt115/fig045-1158601.asp and check parts 13, 14 and 19. These parts were very deteriorated on my motor and had to be replaced. I also replaced parts 16 and 17 while I was in there. The U shaped area that part 13(exhaust rubber gasket) seats into was very corroded on mine and had to be repaired with JB weld. You must have a very good seal at that area for your pump to have good suction. Also look at http://store.brownspoint.com/dt115/fig019-1158601.asp and check part 19, my part was very corroded and also had to be replaced. Hope this helps a little.
