I was told it is an 85hp of the 1990's

It's a 1997.

From # 317679 to 318256 85AE L 1997

And the character W says it too.

For future uses find the model number on the stern bracket. It is easier to figure out the proper year and type of motor when ordering parts. If its an 85 horsepower the model number will start with 85 and have two, three or four letters following it. If W is the last it is the year code 97 as stated.
