Suzuki DT40 -- Neutral switch & beeping

I have a 1989 Suzuki DT40 with remote control & no gauges.

After the motor refused to crank, I discovered the neutral start switch hanging loosely in the bottom of the engine. As a temporary measure, I tape the switch in the closed position (indicating engine in neutral) and it cranked and started up. But now it is beeping at me once every 4 seconds or so once I put it into gear. Hmm?

Is this a coincidence or is there something else I should be checking that the beeping is related to? The oil reservoir is half full. The engine is peeing out the back. It does not feel particularly hot to the touch.

By the way, the previous owner ran a wire from the remote to the engine for unknown reasons and other wires in the harness from the remote to the engine may not be connected.

Thanks for your help.

Basic rule, fix the things you know about first. Refit the neutral switch correctly.
