Re: suzuki dt40 1996 overheating

Need to remove the lower unit. Locate the shift rod above the lower unit at the front of the motor. See a barrel type nut with a lock nut. Both are 10mm. use two 10mm wrenches to free the lock nut. Put the shift in forward and back the barrel nut up untill it disconnects from the lower rod. remember the number of turns for refitting. Tilt the motor into the up position. Undo the bolts around the lower unit skirt. Pull the lower unit free and remove. if it does not come free you have probably missed a bolt. The water pump has four bolts or nuts depending on model. Remove these and work the pump housing up the drive shaft. If the impeller comes up with the housing watch for the key. Dont drop it or loose it. With the impeller removed check to see if any bits have broken off. If they have then you could have blockages in the water ways. May need a motor tear down to clear that. Check the pump lower plate and the inside of the housing for bad scoring. If bad these too will need replacing. If all is well fit a new impeller over the shaft and locate it on the key. Lower the housing over the shaft and wilst applying a downward pressure on the housing, rotate the shaft clockwise looking from above to locate the housing. Replace the bolts in the pump. Grease the splines on the Drive shaft and refit the lower unit. Probably have to rotate the drive shaft in steps to engage it in the powerhead. Always rotate the shaft clockwise. If you accidentally rotate anticlock the pump will have to be dismantled again.
Good luck.
