Yamaha 50 hp lower fit an 85 hp?

I just bought a boat that has a 1996 85hp yamaha but the lower unit is messed up. I think the clutch dog is broke. It won't stay in rev. and in neutral sounds like the gears are touching (almost sounds like a 10 speed bike when you pedal backwards). I found a 50hp lower unit on ebay. It looks exactly like the one on my 85hp but I don't know much about outboards and hate to buy it and it not fit. Any info would be appreciated.

thanks. I 'm glad i didn't buy it. Does anyone know what other size motors that the lower will interchange with? The motor is 1996 85hp outboard that I have. I got a quote of $1000 dollars for a used lower unit. Does this sound like a good deal?

Don't know if youve found the lower unit yet but try craigslist. I have found a ton of parts for both the boat and motor I'm rebuilding

the only other lower unit that will fit on your 85hp is that of a 90hp yamaha .....
