2001 60HP Yamaha Impeller Change Question

Do I need to put the motor in a specific gear(F,N,R) before I drop the lower unit? Seems like I heard this is important. Please help.

My heat alarm goes off when engine idles for a while but goes off when i bring the rpm's up. Should I change teh impeller first and that might fix issue? Motor is about 9 years old and I have never changed. Is it very hard to change?
