90 hp yamaha missing under load sometimes

i have a 2000 model 90 hp yamaha that runs great most of the time but sometimes it just acts like it is cutting out spark under a load. my buddy has the same motor ( a few years newer ) that also does the same thing. is there something ( sensor or something ) that is a common problem on these motors? once it does it if i put it in reverse and continue on it is fine for a while and then unexpectedly it will drop spark again untill process is repeated? thanks in advance.
