I have a 1986 40HP Yamaha, model# 40ELJ. I am trying to rebuild the Lower unit and My Question is does anyone know if the plain bearing is necessary before you put on the pinion gear? I know it is not necessary from 1988 models and onward. Unit will not go together with this bearing in place. Unit goes together nicely without the plain bearing and seems okay, however, I dont know if it will be okay with the engine running under a load. Please advise. Thank You!

I don't know exactly what bearing you are talking about. I was reading my clymer manual today, contemplating repairing my lower unit.

some of the bearings require special tools to remove or install. it may be that this is your problem. just a guess.

when assembling press fit parts like oil seals or sleeves, use silver colored anti-seize grease it helps the parts go together with less force.
