WOT on 115 hp Yamaha. How much over is too much?

Well, I finally got the new tach working on my 2002 Yamaha 115 hp outboard. The Selco manual says WOT is 5500 rpms. When on the river today, with full throttle, I was running about 6200 rpm. I can only assume the new tach is accurate as it zero's out when I turn the key and I idle about 1000 rpm's.

My quesion is this: Is the higher than lister WOT a throttle adjustment that I should try to make? Or could it be the prop is not correct? I believe the prop is the original (the boat is a 2002 Bay Stealth by VIP) and it has very few run hours.

Any input would be appreciated.

6200 is a bit high, but 6 grand wouldn't make me nervous. 1,000 at idle is also high, 750 would be better.

Likely you may need to try a different prop. The limiter should have kicked in around 6100 (tach could be off slightly). You will not feel it kick in. if the limiter has been disconnected that is still not enough RPM to be concerned about.

I would ck the tach and see if its accurate at 1000rpm at idle you would be slaming into gear pretty hard if tach is reading high WOT rpm will be good around 5800
