I bought a DVA from Electronic Specialities (http://www.esitest.com/640.html). When I use it with a Greenlee multimeter (model DM-60) from Lowes to measure the AC voltage coming from the high and lo ignition charge coil around 900 RPM, I get measurements of ~425V for both. My manual says ~45V and ~160V. I am reading from brown to red and blue to black\red. Am I doing something wrong?

does your manual say to run it at 900 rpm ?
or crank it over?

at 900 rpm your low speed should be a lot less and 425v
for high speed is a lot.
i dont know the specs and i have no manual.
all i know is there should be a big difference between the lo and high speed coils.
how does the Ohms test do for you?
you have the meters on dc voltage for peak volts with adapter?

Re: Charge Coil volts with DVA-'96 Yamaha C115

first u need to unplug it from the CDI box
do the test, u want at least 100-300V
u have a high speed and low speed stator
check resistance also, and do a ground to wire check to see if the insulation is gone
i have seen ohms right with no volts, that is why u test both, volts and ohms

next, plug the wires back in and check primary coil voltage, u should have at least 100v

is your meter shielded also, if it is not u will get wired readings

All resistances check correctly. I thought it was AC on the charge coils into the CDI.

Not sure of the meter is shielded. Anything I should look for on the meter such as some sort of certification or a shielded symbol?

The engine is running fine. I bought the DVA to diagnose any future ignition problems and I am just trying to learn how to use it.

Re: Charge Coil volts with DVA-'96 Yamaha C115

it is ac comming out of the chargecoil
but you are measuring dc peak voltage.

so your meter should be set for dc

the dva adapter rectifies it into peak voltage DC

Thanks. Had no clue about that.
