What's best test procedure to diagnose no battery charge? Showing 12.4 to 12.7volts when running up to 1500 rpms

thanks

Re: Suzuki '87 150hp charging problems

u need to get a meter
find your starter solenoid
find i think it is white, or red white, that is battery charge
find the fuse and check it
no plug the red lead on the meter to the wire that goes to regulator/rectifier and black to ground
either start or crank motor, u should see 13 plus volts if running, around 12.5v if cranking
u could have a bad reg/rectifier or bad battery charge coil

do u have the manual, if not get one asap

Re: Suzuki '87 150hp charging problems

I have a simple DMM. Is it ok?
Battery charging coils 1 & 2 each have a red and yellow lead which tie together in the magneto, so then a single red and yellow run to the rectifier/regulator, then white lead comes out that goes through fuse to sarting mtr relay. Battery charging coil #3 also has red and yellow leads coming out which go to a rectifier (looks like diode?), then white comes out and goes over to rectifier/regulator. Which one do I plug the red meter lead on to?

I do have manual but your directions much simpler.

thanks

Re: Suzuki '87 150hp charging problems

u need a dva to test the red and yellow leads for volts
u can do a ohms reading though

just test the red yellow leads by the starter Selinda which is ur reg/rect

right u have a rectifier and a regulator/rectifier

either bad coil or bad reg/rect

it might be as simple as blown fuse or bad wiring also

Re: Suzuki '87 150hp charging problems

With a DVA meter to test volts, would I hook the meter red lead to the red lead from the charging coils at the rectifier/regulator and the black meter lead to ground?
And then run a second voltage test on the yellow wire from the charging coils, hooking my meter red test lead to it and the black to ground? If this is correct should each of these separate voltage tests show 13 volts or better?

no
red to red
black to yellow

then fuse out of white
red to white
black to ground

let us know what u got
it says in the factory manual

the cool thing about suz is, that they give volts and ohms specs

Hoping to get over to the boat today. If so, will take readings and get back.

thanks
