Need a second opinion.

My 1987 Yamaha 90's overheat alarm went off.

I checked the obvious and found nothing serious. The impeller was fine, the thermostat was old but seemed OK. On reaching my technical limit I took it to a mechanic. His diagnosis:

"there was a corrosion pinhole in the head that was allowing water into the head. There is a second internal anode inside the engine block that had never been changed and this allowed for the corrosion problem.

The necessary parts:

Head
Thermo gasket
bolts
thermostat
water jacket gasket
head gasket
spark plugs

Is this sound correct? A second anode in the head? Sound fishy?

The estimate for parts is almost $400. Labor aprox. $300.

I just need a second opinon. Are these the correct parts and the prices for parts/labor in the general ballpark?

Thanks

could be,
yes there is an anode in the block water jacket, they dont do much and never get changed.
without seeing the pinhole I cannot comment. I have seen it before on a few makes.
labor sounds a tad high for a head change but I am not sure what issues he had with removal.
in fact with that much corrosion I am amazed it came off at all.

Rodbolt -

Thanks for your reply. I have only owned the engine for 3 years and it was run in salt water all of its life.

Your review has been a great help.
