prop shaft removal from yamaha 250 hp 1991

Please help i am trying to remove the prop shaft from my 1991 yam 250 hp 76 degree vx
i have removed the rear hub and bearing but am unable to pull out shaft.
Do ihave to remove shift rod? if so how do i remove this? ihave taken off the shift rod top cover but there seems no apparent way of removing it. I have the manual but it doesnt help at all. Manny thanks simon england.

yes the shift rod must be withdrawn, some of those 3.1 cases used a two part rod with a gear mechanism and had a tiny cam. pay attention to the dot on the cam, it faces up for one rotation and down for another and I cant remember which is which but if its wrong it wont line up at reassembly.
if its not broken the shift rod pulls straight up.
