Hello,

What would be the likely cause of a small amount of gear oil leaking out the water intake on my lower unit. The engine has been stored a while and I was about to drop the lower until anyway to replace the water pump. What should I be looking for as the cause to the leak? Thanks

if its a thick black oily looking substance its likely exhaust buildup thats run down from inside the trunk. once your leg has been removed and drained and the w/p is off, pressure/vacuum test the gearbox and check for leaks at the drive shaft and prop shaft seal areas, as well as the shift shaft. this requires some specialized tooling. its not uncommon for us to get a diy dude bring one in for us to test.

Thanks Ben! It definitly smells like gear oil. I'll have it pressure tested as you suggest.

I have the same issue, and I believe it is gear oil. Did you find out what caused the leak and what can be done to fix it? Is this a major issue?
