Are Yamaha service bulletins online for public access? Looked at their website and couldn't find them. Have a 2002 115 hp four stroke. Trim motor will not run. Hear sound like solenoids cicking but no trim motor activity. Read other posts of similar sounding issues, but no one has confirmed what was the real problem (switches or motor).

Welcome to iboat.

Service bulletins are only available to dealers. Yamaha has a website just for dealers and you can't get in without the proper ID. They don't want customers having access to that information. Too much room for confusion and people freaking out about problems that might pertain to that model, but not their serial number range, etc.

Yamaha uses an extremely reliable trim unit, but sometimes water gets into the electric motor and freezes things up. You're hearing clicking which means that the relays are working although the contacts inside could be bad. It's rare for both UP and DOWN relays to fail at the same time.

Try this ... turn the manual release valve out a turn or two and tilt the motor up and flip the tilt lock so it can't come back down. Put one hand on the trim motor and toggle the trim switch. If power is getting to the trim motor, you'll feel a little something. Even a frozen trim motor will try to move although it won't be much. But it's usually enough to be able to detect by feel. Naturally if it runs, you'll be able to hear it.

That's what I figured re: service bulletins.
.
I opened the manual release and had someone help lift motor to lock position. No evidence of tilt motor activity. Guess it's time for a trip to the shop.

Took boat/motor into the dealer. Of course the trim was working this time. No problems found by mechanic. Voltage looked good, yadda yadda yadda. What kinds of issues can cause the trim to work off and on in a motor 1.5 yrs old?

Switches can be intertmittent, but the clicking suggests they are working. Check for loose connections on the battery cables and that the ground connections at the relay are tight.

What's the likelyhood that freezing temps are involved? At the time it wasn't working temps were mid 20's F. A week later temps were 60-70 F and worked fine. Do these systems get water/condensate? Last use of the boat, I had washed it down with pressure washer after trip to salt water. Any possibility that might have gotten water into it?

Water in the switches is always a problem. I have seen motors trim clear into the boat during a rain storm or race motors clear into the cowlings. Another good reason for battery cut off switches.

Yes it's possible that there's water in there and if it froze, it certainly could've caused a blockage. It could also cause freeze damage if there's enough. A tiny drop can plug a line. A bunch can break internals when it freezes. Changing fluid involves removing the unit.

The pressure washer isn't a terribly likely source as hydraulic pressures far exceed high pressure washers. If fluid isn't leaking out, it shouldn't leak in. But long exposure can allow water in over a long time. One of the most common ways for water to enter is at the fill/level plug gasket or o-ring.

Ray has a good point about rain and trim switches. Most of the problems I've notoced in that area involve aftermarket switches in the bow or on the dash. The factory ones are fairly well sealed, but they can get water in them too.
