Hi,
I've found an 18'hull here in Oz with a 1982 85hp oil injected Suzuki.

In the course of research for known issues I've come across their liking blowing head gaskets.

My question: does anyone know WHY this occurs, and hence is there any preventative action I can take ie: work the motor in a particular way, or even just get in and replace the thing now B4 it fails.

(Motor been owned my an outboard mechanic - it's as clean and well cared for as the day it left the showroom. He has used it, but taken meticulous care of it...).

Also, aside from head gasket, any other known issues?? I've read a few carby related threads but not enough to convince me it's a known issue.

Thanks for any thoughts
David.

Re: Suzuki 85hp - head gasket + reliability

One problem with the early OEM head gaskets was the coolant drain holes were too small and the head cooling passages tended to get salted up. Replacement head gaskets have a long slot the length of the gasket to prevent this. I have read here that if you get a bad overheat episode they may start a leak. I don't know whether that is related to the old style gasket or not. Since I pulled my head and cleaned the channels and replaced the head gasket I have had no problems with the head on my 1987 DT85. They are good solid engines if cared for and left in good condition. Their carbs like to be kept clean, so make sure the fuel line has a good water separating filter on it. The biggest problem with them may be snapping bolts during repair, but that is endemic with saltwater outboards anyway.

Thanks for that,

another issue I've learnt is they corrode between the prop bearing carrier and the rear of the lower leg housing, and crack the casing after time.
The motor I'm interested in has that very problem, and while getting it welded here in Sydney isn't a drama, I can't help but wonder if there are any other "skeletons" in the closet...

The motor is coming with a factory workshop manual and I do mpost of my own work that I can without specialist tools and/or knowledge.

Did U need any special tools for you head gasket repair?
how long did it take to do??
Regards,
David
