I've got a 3cyl yamaha 40hp that surges a little bit ONLY at WOT. It feels like its leaning out and picking up the RPMs a bit when running at constant WOT. This results in a mildly annoying jerking at full throttle.

I have disassembled the carbs and cleaned a stuck float this past winter. I have also replaced the fuel pump, gas tank, and fuel hose/bulb.

I think I've got a small air leak somewhere in/around my carbs. How can I test for an air leak? Particularly one which only occurs at WOT and seems very small. Which gaskets are usually the cause of an air leak at high speed?

I appreciate your comments.

If you had a stuck float, I hope you replaced the needles in the carbs. The only intake gasket likely to leak would be the one between the carb and the intake. Spraying carb cleaner around a suspected leak while the engine is running is one way to troubleshoot for it. Need to be careful and remember it is flamable.
