My son is looking at a used boat with a 1990 Yamaha 85. The engine started and idled fine, ran good under load for about 40 minutes, we stopped about 2 miles offshore for about 10 minutes to run on the kicker, the Yamaha 85 was then restarted (mo problems), however it seemed a little rougher on idle, on the run back in the engine seemed to run well. At the boat ramp the Yamaha 85 was rough at low speed and even stalled in reverse but restarted easily. Any ideas about what may be wrong?. When we put the boat on the trailer I checked the engine temp by touching all three cylinders-they were all about the same temp and were only warm to the touch. I looked all the carbs to see if there was any leaks-bone dry. Any ideas-should I avoid this engine? I've owned 3 boats but they were all Volvo IO/OB's and know very little about outboards. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. P.S. Engine has and will be used in salt water. Very cold Canadian salt chuck.

Thanks
