can anyone helpme with a queri\y regarding the electrical output connection on a 8hp yamaha? When the engine is running, the output from the connector at the front of the engine reads around 26v ac. Is this normal? I want to use the output to charge 12v battery. Do I have a 24v version of engine, and why is it not a dc output? Do I need to feed this output into a regulator to give me the required 13.8v dc charging voltage?

thanks

Re: yamaha 8hp charging output

You need to install a regulator/ rectifier ($58 from iboats). Do not hook the battery up without installing a regulator, it is dangerous. It should take you about 15-minutes to install the regulator. Attach green wires to green, red to a fused lead to the battery and the black to the engine ground (wire with ring connector from the stop button to the engine black) using a ring connector. A lead should then be run from the engine ground to the negative terminal of the battery.

Have fun,
Craig
