took my 9.9 out yesterday and it started fine....100 yards later it stalled out...started like twice but dies out....checked and it seems to be getting fuel and is getting spark....did compression check and its only reading 3.5 psi.....can a motor just go bad just like that....i did run some sea foam in it previously and it was all good...so doubt that messed something up....is there any simple way to check anything in the internals without taking it all apart...shops told me they won't work on it since it is a 1997

I would test the compression gauge on another motor just to make sure it is reading properly/good.
if low compression is true, pulling the head to inspect would be the best idea.
but you might use a bore scope to see if that will show anything.
hole in piston
broke rings,
blown head gasket

are both cylinders reading that low?
hard to believe a motor with only 3.5 psi compression would even try to start.
my bet would be carb needs cleaning

we figured out the issue...it has a vacuum leak at the carb to intake gasket...ordered a new carb and gasket since it was only like $20 more than what it would cost to just rebuild the 30 year old carb. not sure why my compression gauge was reading so low... we had it running on starter fluid.
