I hope someone can give me a little advice on replacing the throttle (?) joint link on my 1990 40HP Yamaha outboard. (40SD-JD)

I noticed recently that the existing joint link
(small white plastic part like this: http://www.bhg-marine.co.uk/yamaha-6h1-41237-00-joint-link-5448-p.asp)
that connect the throttle control arm to the engine
was cracked.
I ordered a new part from the local Yamaha place and the new one is gray and a bit longer in the body
More like this:

So how important is the position of the joint link on the metal control arm? Will it effect my throttle response if the link joint is not the same length?
I realize that I should have marked the position of the joint link before I replaced it but too late now, I have already put the new link on.
Since this motor is a jet I can not run it in the drive way so I will have to go the the local lake to try it out and see if I get the same throttle response as before.
But I thought I would ask here for advice now. So is there a methodology for adjusting the joint link to insure proper throttle throw.

Thanks for you time on this question,
Steven

which one is suppose to be for your motor?
the 6H1 and 6H4 should be for different motors

If this part is from the main throttle cable, you just adjust it with control in neutral so it just slips on to the ball without a bind or opening the throttle
