Suzuki DF2.5: super-high revs in Neutral

Anytime I shift from Forward to Neutral, the engine races. It seems to settle down to idle after a good, full minute. (When I first start the engine, it idles just fine.)

Problem: As I approach the dock, I shift into Neutral to control boat speed (now raving high), then engage Forward for the final push... and of course slams into gear.

Anyone have any ideas? Thanks! Chuck

Take the cowl off while someone works the throttle to see if the cable is sticking and the throttle lever on the carb is not coming back to idle.
We have one of these engines and the carbs are very sensitive to dirt and contamination. They are set to run very lean.
