88 Yamaha 40 hp - opinion?

Looking at a used 88 Starcraft bass boss 160 with a 88 Yamaha 40 hp

Overall pics look like its it pretty good shape but he says the engine has t been run in 4 years but was running when put into storage

Anything I should be looking for with this engine? I am not familiar with yamahas but if I can get the boat for a good deal I might take a chance on it

I might ask him to shoot the cylinders with oil and let that sit and see if the flywheel can be turned by hand.

Any opinions would be helpful

All motors ran well at some time in the past, if it doesn't run now its not worth anything, so unless he gets it running the value is zero. As for putting oil in the cylinders, just try and turn it by hand as is, you want to know if it's stuck before buying it. Again, if its stuck at all the value is zero.

Agreed. I would think that if it sat for that long you'd at least try to get it running before posting to sell and not just say it doesn't run so I'm likely to just assume the unit is finished and price accordingly
