hi i just tried out my dt25j 1980s outboard on my 15' skiff. it seemed to slip at over 1/2 throttle. kind of like cavitation but more like splines or gears slipping. took apart the lower unit, everything looks fine, but about i/8" play between forward and reverse driven gears. could the drive shaft be slipping up under thrust?

kbayjim Your new thread. Please read the Help Tip on top of the page.

Too bad you tore the lower unit apart without testing for a spun prop hub.

yep, rubber spline is wore out. took it to a prop shop he said drill tap and bolt thru the aluminum prop, rubber middle and brass female spline, but not thru the shaft. did it , 3, 1/4 x 20 bolts ready for testing.

Maybe best to just go with a new prop for your motor....keep he old one for an emergency spare. Aluminum props for your motor may be around $60, more or less...
